Namak Head House, Yecheon
예천 남악종택 · 醴泉 南嶽宗宅

This house is the birthplace of Kim Ju, pen name Bulguedang, who was active as an official opposed to capitulation during the Manchu invasion of 1636 (Byeongjahoran); the house has a low hill behind it and faces east. When the roof was repaired in 1981, roof tiles inscribed with characters were discovered, and on this evidence the house is thought to have been built before 1634, the twelfth year of King Injo. The house is arranged with a U-shaped main hall and a straight middle-gate quarters and men's quarters, together forming a square plan, in front of which stands an L-shaped thatched gate quarters. Namak Head House adjusts the height of the main hall, men's quarters and gate quarters according to the rise and fall of the terrain, securing views and good ventilation. It is notable for creating a pleasant space that lets in plenty of sunlight; in particular, although the house has a square plan, both wing sections were extended so that sunlight can reach deep into the inner courtyard. The house also has many folk characteristics, such as the many small rooms fitted out for specific uses, and the separation of interior and exterior space achieved by arranging an independent outdoor area. This heritage is generally open to visitors, but access may be restricted owing to the personal circumstances of the owner or others.
