Songso House, Cheongsong
청송 송소 고택 · 靑松 松韶 古宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krSim Ho-taek, pen name Songso, the seventh-generation descendant of Sim Cheo-dae, who enjoyed a manseok fortune (wealth measured in tens of thousands of seok of grain) in the reign of King Yeongjo of Joseon, built this house in 1880 when he moved from Jigyeong-ri (Hobakgol), Pacheon-myeon, to Deokcheon-ri, the ancestral base of his family. The house bears a plaque reading "Songsosejang" and belonged to a family that maintained its manseok fortune for nine generations. Built in the folk-house style of the northern part of Gyeongsangbuk-do, it has an independent courtyard and separate spaces for reception, daily life and work, preserving relatively well the characteristics of an upper-class house of the Joseon period. It is also of great folkloric value for the inner and outer walls that partition the outer courtyard, and for a separate shrine capable of housing the ancestral rites of four or more generations under the extended-family system. It was originally designated Cheongsong Folk Material of Gyeongsangbuk-do on 30 December 1985, but following an application on 12 April 2007 it was designated National Folklore Heritage on 12 October 2007. This heritage is generally open to visitors, but access may be restricted owing to the personal circumstances of the owner or others.
