KOGL Type 4Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This is where Kim Whanki (pen name Suhwa, 1913–1974), one of Korea's leading Western-style painters and a man devoted to modernising traditional Korean beauty, grew up; the house today comprises the main quarters, a studio and other buildings. Kim Whanki was a first-generation Korean modernist painter who turned classical Korean subject matter into an abstract visual language and opened a new chapter in Korean art. This house has historical and artistic value as the space where he lived and worked during his childhood and youth, and it is also valuable evidence of how a traditional early-twentieth-century house was practically adapted as society changed with the arrival of the modern era. It was originally designated a Jeollanam-do Monument, but following an application submitted on 3 May 2007 it was designated a National Folklore Cultural Heritage on 12 October 2007. This heritage site is open to visitors at all times.
