Clothes Excavated from the Tomb of Lady Sin, Mungyeong
문경 평산신씨 묘 출토복식 · 聞慶 平山申氏 墓 出土服飾

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe tomb of Lady Sin of the Pyeongsan Sin clan, in Mungyeong, was the solitary grave of a woman of the early Joseon period. In 2004, when the tomb was relocated, a large quantity of clothing was excavated from it. The excavated artefacts amount to more than seventy items, including clothing such as jeogori (jackets), skirts, trousers and dallyeong (the round-collared official robe worn by Joseon-dynasty officials), as well as burial-shroud items such as grave shoes, hand covers and a length of silk placed in the coffin, together with head-covering items. After conservation and restoration treatment, they are now held at the Mungyeong Saejae Museum. A particularly unusual feature among the clothing excavated from the tomb is a skirt made throughout of jikgeumdan, a silk fabric woven with a pattern in gold thread; this is an extremely splendid and distinctive object, and a very valuable source for the history of costume and textiles. The clothing excavated from the tomb of Lady Sin is of great value not only as historical material for research into the composition of early Joseon costume and into textiles, but also as important material through which to view the unusual tradition — continued for over 400 years — of ancestral rites carried on by descendants through a daughter's line, and even the local history of the Mungyeong area in the sixteenth century.
