Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis shingled house (neowajip) preserves the traditional house form that existed on Ulleungdo Island at the time of its settlement (1883) and was built in the 1940s. It is a five-bay single-row house roofed with wooden shingles. The main room, middle room and side room are all built with log-cabin (gwitteul), corner-notched construction; the main room and middle room open onto the kitchen, which also serves as the smoke outlet, while the side room has its own separate fire-hole, set where the udegi — a wind-and-snow break wall built around the house — projects outward. Udegi surrounds the entire house, and at the front there is a wide jukdam, a raised stone-and-clay platform. The log cabin (tumakjip) was built in 1945; it originally had three bays, but a further bay was added, giving it four bays today. Its roof has been newly thatched. The walls of the main room and middle room are of log-cabin construction, and the kitchen hearth vents smoke directly from the fire-hole rather than through a separate flue; the kitchen floor is set lower than the jukdam, with a single step down to it. The kitchen has no wall of its own and is instead screened by an udegi made of standing cornstalks. The jukdam around the rooms is wider only at the front, for ease of movement. It was originally designated Gyeongsangbuk-do Folklore Material, Shingled House of Naridong, Ulleung and Log Cabin of Naridong, Ulleung (29 December 1984), then, upon application (24 August 2007), was designated a National Folklore Cultural Heritage (31 December 2007). This heritage site is generally open to the public, but viewing may be restricted due to the personal circumstances of the owner.
