This is a tumakjip, a traditional log house that preserves the house form found on Ulleungdo Island at the time of its settlement in 1883; it was built in the 1940s. The house is a four-bay single-row building with a newly re-thatched roof, enclosed with a newly woven udegi, a straw windbreak wall built around the house against wind and snow. The main room and the inner room are built in kwitteul construction, a method of stacking horizontal logs interlocked at the corners, and the stable, separated from them by the kitchen, was also built using kwitteul construction. In some of the walls the gaps between the logs were left unfilled with clay, allowing a view through the gaps and good ventilation. The kitchen floor was set low, fitted with a cooking stove, with an ondol underfloor heating system laid using the stove's smoke flue. It was originally designated Gyeongsangbuk-do Folklore Material, Tumakjip House of Naridong, Ulleung, on 29 December 1984, but following an application on 24 August 2007 it was designated a National Folklore Cultural Heritage on 31 December 2007. This heritage site is generally open to the public, but viewing may be restricted due to the personal circumstances of the owner.
