The "Clothes Excavated from the Tombs of Choe Jin and His Family, Mungyeong" were discovered in 2006 during the relocation of the tombs of the Jeonju Choe clan in Yeongsun-myeon, Mungyeong, Gyeongsangbuk-do, and are now held at the Mungyeong Yetgil Museum (Museum of the Old Road). The finds from the three tombs -- those of Choe Jin and his wife, and a further tomb believed to belong to a descendant -- comprise 65 items in total, including caps, jungchimak robes, aekjureum robes (a straight-collared robe pleated below the armpits), jeogori jackets and trousers; of these, 59 items, excluding those too damaged, were designated National Folklore Heritage. In particular, the jungchimak and a jokduri-style woman's cap are thought to be the oldest examples of excavated clothing found to date. The jungchimak was a straight-collared robe with side vents worn by scholar-official families when going out; most examples found until now date from after the Japanese invasions of 1592-1598 (Imjinwaeran), but the discovery of a jungchimak among these garments makes it possible to confirm the actual form of the jungchimak from before the Imjinwaeran, making it valuable material for the study of the history of costume in this period. The jokduri-style cap also has a circular piece at the crown, showing the early form of the jokduri. The clothes excavated from the tombs of Choe Jin and his family are precious material for the study of the history of men's and women's dress in the mid-to-late sixteenth century, and together with the already-designated "Clothes Excavated from the Tomb of the Pyeongsan Sin Clan, Mungyeong" (National Folklore Heritage), they provide a key to understanding the social and cultural conditions of the region at the time.
