This house was built by the scholar Choe Dong-jip (pen name Daeam), who settled here during the reign of King Injo of Joseon. It is the oldest Joseon-period house in the Daegu region, and consists of a residential quarter together with a ritual hall and shrines. The residential quarter comprises the main hall (anchae), built in 1694, the twentieth year of King Sukjong, and the men's quarters (sarangchae), rebuilt in 1905, the ninth year of the Gwangmu era. The sarangchae is said to have been rebuilt using some of the timber salvaged when Dongcheon Seowon academy was demolished under the Daewongun's order abolishing seowon academies. To the right of the residential quarter stands Bobondang, a shrine built in 1742, the eighteenth year of King Yeongjo, which is used as a ritual hall for ancestral rites. Behind it stand two further shrine buildings, enshrining the spirit tablets of Choe Dong-jip and of Choe Heung-won, a scholar active during the reign of King Jeongjo of Joseon. With its main hall, men's quarters, ritual hall, family shrine and separate shrine combined in harmony, this large house is valuable material for studying the houses and way of life of Joseon-period yangban gentry. It was first designated, as the head house of the Gyeongju Choe clan and the Bobondang shrine in Dunsan-dong, Dong-gu, Daegu, a Folk Material on 4 March 1982, and was redesignated a National Folk Heritage on 19 June 2009 following an application submitted on 10 December 2007. This heritage site is generally open to visitors, but viewing may at times be restricted owing to the personal circumstances of the owner or other residents.
