Nampa House in Naju was built in the late Joseon period (1884) by Park Jae-gyu, whose pen name was Nampa, and was later remodelled in the 1910s and 1930s. It is the largest single private house building in South Jeolla Province, and its design imitates the form of a government office building, showing relatively well the structure of an upper-class house of the southern Jeolla region. In particular, the various everyday implements and crafts, especially the regional types of paper, preserved within the house are well arranged by period, making it valuable material for research into the everyday culture of the Naju area of the Honam region. Accordingly, Nampa House, Naju is a representative yangban house of the Honam region, of considerable scale and formality, preserving both its family history and the characteristics of its period; as a late-19th-century upper-class house of the South Jeolla region it has sufficient folkloric and architectural value to merit recognition as a national heritage. It was originally designated as Naju Park Gyeong-jung House, a South Jeolla Province cultural heritage material, on 1 June 1987, but following an application submitted on 24 June 2008 it was redesignated a National Folk Cultural Heritage on 17 December 2009. This heritage site is generally open to visitors, but viewing may be restricted owing to the personal circumstances of the owner or others.
