Beonnam House, Andong
안동 번남고택 · 安東 樊南古宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krBeonnam House belongs to the line descended from the second grandson of Yi Hwang (Toegye), and is said to have been built in imitation of Changdeokgung Palace. It was built during the reign of King Sunjo by Yi Dong-sun, pen name Beonam, and later rebuilt by his grandson Yi Man-yun, pen name Jwasan. It is said to have originally comprised 99 bays, making it the largest house in the Yeongnam region, but part of it was destroyed during the Korean War, and around 50 bays survive today. Its scale, layout and floor plan are almost unmatched elsewhere in the Andong area, and it retains its old building sites along with spaces finely subdivided according to the principle of separating men's and women's quarters and by function. It is an important piece of national heritage for understanding the traditional residential culture of scholar-official families in the late Joseon period.
