This head house is presumed to have been first built in 1541, the 36th year of King Jungjong of Joseon. In 1974 it was moved 2 km from its original site to its present location, on a hillside on the outskirts, because of the construction of Andong Dam. Although the orientation of the house changed, it was rebuilt in a form identical to the original, following the original layout. The building is well preserved and shows the typical arrangement, common in the Andong region, of a quadrangular, courtyard-enclosed plan in which the sarangchae (men's quarters) and anchae (women's quarters) are linked by wings on either side. It is a venerable head house that reflects well the way of life and architectural sensibility of the local gentry of Andong in the mid-Joseon period. It also preserves a range of folk materials, including old documents of the clan and the Suunjapbang, the oldest surviving cookbook recording the cooking and processing methods of traditional food from the early Joseon period, written by Kim Yu, whose pen name was Takcheongjeong (1481-1552). These are valuable materials for understanding the social and economic history of the period along with the history of everyday life.
