Museom Village, Yeongju, is a village of deep historical heritage that has been the clan settlement of the Bannam Park and Seonseong Kim clans since the mid-17th century, the middle of the Joseon period, when the founding ancestors* Park Su (朴燧) and Kim Dae (金臺) first settled here. Also, Adoseosuk, a private school established during the Japanese colonial period by public-spirited villagers, served as the regional centre of the anti-Japanese resistance movement and holds important significance in the history of Korea's independence movement. Museom is the native Korean name for Sudo-ri (水島里), meaning "a village floating on the water like an island"; it is a typical village encircled on three sides by a looping river, the Naeseongcheon Stream, which curves around the front of the village clear and calm, with the mountains and water embracing and coiling around each other in the shape of a taegeuk, forming a spectacular landscape. Within the village are houses of varied form and style, including large and formal square-plan houses such as Haeudang House and Manjukjae House, as well as kkachigumeongjip** houses, gyeopjip*** houses, and dwellings typical of the southern provinces, making the village a valuable resource for research into traditional housing and folk customs. * Ipbyang-sijo (founding ancestor) — the person who first entered a village and settled there, or that person's ancestor. ** Kkachigumeongjip — so called because the vent openings made in the sides of a thatched roof to let smoke escape resemble a magpie's nest. *** Gyeopjip — a house type found mainly in Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province and the northern part of Gyeongsangbuk-do, in which the main room, sarangbang (men's quarters), kitchen, floored hall and bongdang (an unfloored space) are all contained within a single building arranged in two parallel rows. This heritage site is generally open to the public, but viewing may be restricted due to the personal circumstances of the owner.
