Mansan House, Bonghwa
봉화 만산고택 · 奉化 晩山古宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis house was built in 1878 by Gang Yong, pen name Mansan (1846-1934), in the late Joseon period. Its main house has a side-entrance, quadrangular, courtyard-enclosed plan, and together with a study, a detached wing and a gate house it fully embodies the composition of an upper-class gentry house, illustrating well the regional architectural character of north-eastern Gyeongsangbuk-do. The signboard reading "Mansan" was bestowed in the handwriting of Heungseon Daewongun, and the plaque under the eaves of the study, reading "Hanmukcheongyeon", was written by Crown Prince Yeong at the age of eight, showing the house's close relationship with the royal family. The detached wing, Chillyuheon, was used as a place where Crown Prince Yeong and various men of letters of the late Joseon period exchanged scholarship, and the scale of the eleven-bay gate house reflects well the social and economic circumstances of the time. The traditional culture of residential life and folk customs is also well preserved here.
