Sudang House was first built in 1637 at the present site near the grave of Agye Yi San-hae (1539–1609), by a woman of the Jeonju Yi clan (1588–1668), the wife of his grandson Yi Gu (1586–1609); it was renovated in 1846 and has continued to the present day. The layout and floor plan of the sarangchae (men's quarters) and anchae (women's quarters) preserve well the characteristics of a banga, a house of a local yangban aristocratic family, and the house is of great architectural and historical value, having produced, through the closing years of Joseon and the Japanese colonial period, four generations of loyalist figures including Sudang Yi Nam-gyu (1855–1907). The large quantity of old documents and family heirlooms produced since the 17th century vividly show the changes undergone by the Sudang family and the actual social and economic conditions of the late Joseon period, giving the house high social, cultural and academic value.
