Sanam House was built as a residence when Sin Chi-hak, a 31st-generation descendant of the Pyeongsan Sin clan, established a separate branch household; it is thought to have been constructed in the late 18th century. The house's name, Sanam, is the pen name of Chi-hak's grandson, U-ho. It is a tteuljip, a house built around an open inner courtyard under a single roof, five bays wide across the front and four bays deep, forming a "ㅁ"-shaped (square courtyard) plan. The floor plan centres on a narrow central gate-hall, with a large sarang (men's quarters), four bays in size, standing independently to the east, and a small sarang to the west; as a result, the entire front section of the house is given over to sarang space. In the large sarang on the east side, two ondol-heated rooms are arranged along the north-south axis, with a wooden-floored room occupying the two easternmost bays; the ondol rooms are partitioned bay by bay, while the wooden-floored room is used as a single continuous space. The small sarang on the west side consists of one ondol room and a sarang wooden-floored room, but at present only a window has been fitted on the front side and access is possible only from the kitchen side and the ondol room, suggesting that the floor plan has since changed. The east wing, which connects to the large sarang, and the main quarters are linked by a hamsil-kan, a small unheated stoke-hole room used only for tending the fire, while the west wing consists of one kitchen bay and the master bedroom. The construction method of the independent sarang quarters, which reflects changes in the house over the period of its building, differs from that of the Head House of the Pansagong Branch of the Pyeongsan Sin Clan and Seobyeok House, while showing similarities with them in overall composition.
