The Head House of the Muuigong Branch of the Muan Bak Clan, Yeongdeok, stands facing south in Dogok Village (Gamagol), Yeongdeok, with a low hill behind it and open fields spreading out in front. It was first built in 1644 by Bak Seon for his elder brother Bak Yu; their father, Bak Ui-jang, had won great merit during the Japanese invasions of Korea (1592-98). The layout, with its expanded inner courtyard and projecting sarang (men's quarters) of a kind that appears from the 17th century onward, and the high degree of independence given to the shrine area, together with the spatial composition of the anchae (women's quarters) and sarangchae reflecting local vernacular features, shows both the character of 17th-century scholar-official residential architecture and regional traits. Traces of a mullion at the centre of the anchae windows and the carved, cloud-shaped strut (paryeon-daegong) in the sarang hall show construction techniques typical of the mid-Joseon period. Documentary records relating to the family are well preserved, folk ancestral rites continue to be performed, and the house serves as an important space where the clan discusses its major affairs and strengthens its cohesion — all of which make it worthy of designation and preservation as an Important Folk Cultural Heritage.
