Sieun House, Andong, stands on the eastern edge of the Pungsan Plain, with its guardian mountain to the east. It is said to have been built in 1525 by Yi Hun, the seventh-generation descendant of the Yean Yi clan, who retired to the countryside in the wake of the Gimyo Sahwa, the 1519 purge of literati officials. In the ㅁ-shaped house plans typical of the Andong region of North Gyeongsang Province, the women's quarters usually have the daecheong, the open wooden-floored hall, at the centre, flanked symmetrically by the sangbang and anbang rooms. Sieun House is distinctive in placing the daecheong to the left, the anbang, the main bedroom, at the centre, and the sangbang in front of the daecheong. The columns of the floor plan do not align with the roof-frame structure but are laid out freely; in the women's quarters the pyeongju, the eave-line columns, are raised to the same height as the goju, the tall interior columns, and the framing method differs between the daecheong and the room sections — features that set this house apart from others. As the home of a family of Confucian scholars, the house holds a substantial collection of old documents, including collected writings composed by its ancestors, and clan meetings are still held at this head house. Possessing the essential qualities expected of a head house that anchors a clan, it is considered worthy of designation and preservation as a National Folklore Cultural Heritage.
