Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krGeumgyejaesa of the Pungsan Ryu clan in Andong is a jaesa, a ritual house built to guard a grave and hold memorial rites, for Ryu Jung-yeong, pen name Ibam, father of Ryu Seong-ryong, pen name Seoae, a renowned chief minister of the Joseon dynasty. Before the mid-sixteenth century, a former Buddhist temple building was taken over and used for this purpose; from the early eighteenth century, a pavilion and several other buildings were added, forming an open, quadrangular layout. This is an unusually large ritual house with two pavilions at the front, and it is an important record for the types and development of pavilion and ritual-house architecture, as well as a valuable heritage representative of the Andong region. In particular, the bracket sets, old-style double-leaf lattice windows and wall construction of Sungsiljae, the building that had been the former Buddhist temple hall, are precious material for dating architectural styles. In establishing Confucian rites of ancestor worship, the Pungsan Ryu clan formed an internal clan assembly to manage the ancestral grave and carry on ancestor worship, and left documents recording clan resolutions on how descendants should honour their ancestors, so that later generations would carry them out unchanged. This shows clearly the establishment of Confucian ideology and the consciousness of ancestor worship, and even allowing for changes over time, descendants today still carry on the practice almost unchanged, making this worthy of designation and preservation as a National Folklore Heritage.
