Sodaeheon-Hoyeonjae House, Daejeon
대전 소대헌·호연재 고택 · 大田 小大軒·浩然齋 古宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Sodaeheon-Hoyeonjae House, Daejeon was built in 1674 when Song Byeong-ha (1646-1697), second grandson of Song Jun-gil, pen name Dongchundang (1606-1672), a leading scholar of the Giho school in the late Joseon period, set up a separate household. Song Byeong-ha's son, Song Yo-hwa, pen name Sodaeheon (1682-1764), rebuilt it on this site in 1714. Song Yo-hwa's wife, Lady Kim of the Andong Kim clan (1681-1722), pen name Hoyeonjae, was a leading woman poet of the late Joseon period, said to have been well versed in the Confucian classics and histories, and left 134 Chinese-verse poems. The house has architectural value for understanding mid-Joseon dwellings in the Daejeon region. It has both a large sarangchae and a small sarangchae with the daecheong (wooden-floored hall) placed to one side, a combination rarely seen elsewhere in the Chungcheong region, and the wooden-floored rooms and narrow verandas of the inner quarters (anchae) are arranged in varying sizes not only at the front but on all four sides, reflecting the area's regional character. Together with the Dongchundang head house, the senior branch of the family, it shows how a single lineage was carried on and reveals the character of a distinguished family's descendants in the Chungcheong region. It retains its mid-Joseon original form relatively well, and, as one of very few surviving houses of its kind in Daejeon, it has considerable value as folklore material for its rarity in showing the region's distinctive character. This heritage site is generally open to visitors, but viewing may be restricted owing to the personal circumstances of the owner or others.
