Joyangnu Pavilion was built together with Munsogak, the government office building of Chuncheon, when the latter was newly constructed. In 1890, the twenty-seventh year of Emperor Gojong's reign, it was rebuilt when a detached palace was set up within the Chuncheon government office, and it came to be used as a gate pavilion. It was relocated to Udusan Mountain in 1938, was partly damaged during the Korean War, and underwent major repairs in 1969. It was moved back to its present site in April 2013. The plaque was recreated by assembling characters from the Cheonjamun (Thousand Character Classic) written in haeseo, standard script, by Sin Wi (pen name Jaha), a renowned calligrapher of the late Joseon period who served as magistrate of Chuncheon in 1818–1819. The pavilion has a hip-and-gable roof and measures three bays across the front and two bays on the side, with a triple gateway set beneath the raised floor, giving it the typical appearance of a gate pavilion. Eight round columns stand at the front and rear, and two more round columns stand at the centre of each side, all set on long, rectangular foundation stones. A stairway to climb up to the pavilion floor is placed at the left of the rear.
