Yeonseo Hyogyo Stele
연서 효교비 · 燕西 孝橋碑

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stele stands at the entrance to Giryong-ri village. It was erected by later descendants to honour the Hong family, renowned for their devotion to filial piety. In this village lived the descendants of Ugu, grandson of Hong Yeon-gyeong, who had served as Vice Minister of the Ministry of Works (gongjo chami) during the Joseon dynasty. Yeon-gyeong himself was deeply filial, and over five generations his descendants produced nine filial sons. According to one story associated with them, during the reign of King Yeongjo, Deukhu, a descendant of Yeon-gyeong, took in an adopted son named Sangjik. While holding the post of Daesaheon (Inspector-General), Sangjik would sometimes fail to attend court. Finding this strange, King Yeongjo asked him the reason, and was told that he had been unable to come because he was visiting his ancestors' graves in his hometown. Deeply moved, the king, in recognition of Sangjik's utmost filial devotion, ordered that his hometown, Maryong-dong, be renamed Hyogyo-dong ('Filial Bridge Village'). The stele has a stone shaft set upon a square base stone and capped with a roof stone. The front bears the large inscription 'Hyogyo' (孝橋, 'Filial Bridge'), while the back carries the text of the memorial. As the site where the descendants had originally erected the stele was too cramped, it was moved to its present location in 1987, and in 1996 the Hyogyogak pavilion was built beside it.
