Jeju Local Confucian School is a national educational institution established to hold memorial rites for Confucius and other sages of old, and to educate the local populace. It was built in Gyo-dong, within Jeju fortress, in the first year of King Taejo of Joseon (1392), and was moved to its present site in the 27th year of King Sunjo (1827), where it has remained ever since. The buildings that survive today include Myeongnyundang Hall, where students studied, and the shrine halls of Daeseongjeon and Gyeseongsa. Myeongnyundang Hall is said to have originally been a beautiful building, but it has since been rebuilt in concrete. Daeseongjeon Shrine enshrines the spirit tablets of Confucius and other sages. During the Joseon period the school received land, books and slaves from the state and used them to teach students, but since the Gabo Reform of 1894 it has held only memorial rites.
