Seated Palgongsanmaaeyaksa Temple Buddha
팔공산마애약사여래좌상 · 八公山磨崖藥師如來坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a huge rock-carved image of the Medicine Buddha (Yaksayeorae), carved into a cliff near the summit of the central peak of Palgongsan Mountain in Daegu. Above the bare head is a large topknot-shaped hair bun. The resilient, elegant face has refined and dignified features. The rounded shoulders appear supple, and the waist is carved slender. The sophistication of the right hand, lowered outward from the knee, and the left hand, resting on the knee and holding a medicine bowl, shows an idealised realistic style. The robe draped over the left shoulder is thin enough to reveal the curves of the body beneath; its folds are natural and regular, and the collar turns back once at the chest, features characteristic of eighth-century Buddhist images. The halo depicts flames blazing upward, with both a head halo and a body halo rendered, finely carved with lotus and vine patterns. The pedestal is carved with lotus petals facing both up and down, supported by two dragons, giving it a splendid appearance. This Medicine Buddha, devoutly worshipped by countless people suffering from illness, is an elegant and splendid work in a realistic style, believed to have been made during the Unified Silla period.
