Hyeonjeolsa is a shrine built to console the spirits of the Three Scholar-Officials — Hong Ik-han, Yun Jip and O Dal-je — and to honour their loyal integrity. These three officials opposed making peace with Qing China during the Byeongja War (the war between Joseon and Qing China of 1636–1637), and gave their lives in loyalty to their country. Kim Sang-heon (1570–1652) and Jeong On (1569–1641), who later shared their convictions, were also enshrined here in addition. The shrine was built at the foot of Namhansanseong Fortress and, in 1693, was given the name "Hyeonjeolsa" by royal decree. It has survived to the present without being affected by Emperor Gojong's abolition of private academies (in 1871, when all but forty-seven academies and associated shrines nationwide were closed). Hyeonjeolsa consists of the shrine itself together with the eastern and western study-hall buildings. The shrine measures three kan across the front and three kan in depth, with a single eave and a gable roof. Below the shrine, the eastern and western study halls each measure three kan across the front and one and a half kan in depth, also with gable roofs. The inner gate leading to the shrine and the outer gate leading to the study halls are each one kan in size. Hyeonjeolsa is today one of the key elements of Namhansanseong Fortress, which was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2014.
