This is a stele erected in memory of Queen Jeongsun, the wife of King Danjong. After King Danjong was put to death in Yeongwol, Queen Jeongsun lived at Jeongeobwon, praying for the repose of his soul for the rest of her life. Jeongeobwon was a convent for Buddhist nuns, originally located inside the city walls not far from Changdeokgung Palace; however, following a tradition that it had stood outside the walls, this stele and its stele pavilion were erected here instead. This appears to be a mistaken tradition arising from a conflation of the fact that Queen Jeongsun lived here, outside Dongdaemun Gate, with the fact that she had served as abbess of Jeongeobwon. The stele was erected in 1771, the 47th year of King Yeongjo of Joseon, and part of the inscription, as well as the text on the pavilion's plaque, was written by the king himself.
