Gwangju Jaemyeong Stone Lantern
광주재명석등 · 光州在銘石燈

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis octagonal stone lantern stands in the front garden of the Jeollanam-do Provincial Office. Around the fire chamber where the light was lit, it has a three-tiered base below and a roof stone and finial above. In the base section a long central shaft stands between the upper and lower base stones, both of which are carved symmetrically with lotus-flower designs. The fire chamber has windows on four sides, and the roof stone placed on top, being rather small, is out of balance with the other parts. Overall it follows the typical Unified Silla style of stone lantern, but its carving technique is coarser and less refined than that of the period. On the central shaft of the lantern is inscribed the date "Mujin", which, taken together with the carving style, appears to indicate the early Goryeo period. It originally stood on the old site of Daehwangsa Temple; it was later moved inside the walled forecourt of Mudeokjeon Hall in front of the Provincial Office, and, owing to construction work, was set up again at its present location.
