Seongnamsa Temple Three-story Stone Pagoda
석남사삼층석탑 · 石南寺三層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Seongnamsa Three-story Stone Pagoda stands in front of Geungnakjeon Hall and is 2.5 m tall. It originally stood in front of Daeungjeon Hall, but was moved to its present location in 1973. The lower base of the pagoda is assembled from several stone slabs, carved on all four sides with arch-shaped niche patterns. Above it, the upper base is formed from four stone slabs. On the surface stones of the base, two corner pillars and one central pillar are carved in relief. The body stone and roof stone of each storey are each made from a single piece of stone. On the body stones the corner pillars are carved neatly on both sides, and the proportion of diminishment becomes more regular as the storeys rise. On the underside of each roof stone are four angular tiers of eave supports, and on the upper side three tiers are carved to support the body stone above. At the top are a flat disc stone, an upward-facing lotus ornament and a canopy-shaped finial; the elements above the disc stone are later repairs. Given its excellent overall proportion of diminishment and its carving technique, the Seongnamsa Three-story Stone Pagoda is presumed to have been built in the late ninth century.
