Chimgwaejeong Pavilion
침괘정 · 枕戈亭

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krChimgwaejeong is a pavilion, a building constructed to allow views in all directions, standing on a hill on the eastern side within Namhansanseong Fortress. Its exact date of construction is unknown, but it is said that when it was discovered, its foundation stones were solid, the ondol (underfloor heating) used in the room was undamaged, and the ondol was set very high. It is also said that when a fire was lit in the room, the room grew warm. The present building was repaired in 1751 by Yi Gi-jin, who served as Gwangju yusu, the official who administered the Gwangju region, and concurrently as sueosa, or defence commander. Yi Gi-jin named it 'Chimgwajeong', but the reason it is now called 'Chimgwaejeong' is not clear. It is presumed that an armoury or a workshop for making weapons originally stood separately near the building. The presence of ondol inside Chimgwaejeong suggests that it was used as an office. The building measures seven bays across the front and three bays to the side. The two bays at the left of the front and the three bays to the side form a wooden-floored room. It also has double eaves, and viewed from the side, the roof is a hip-and-gable roof forming the shape of the character 八 (eight).
