Dongnae Hyanggyo, the local Confucian school of Dongnae, is thought to have been established in 1392, the first year of King Taejo, under the government's policy of promoting education. It burned down during the Japanese invasions of the 1590s, and when Magistrate Hong Jun of Dongnae rebuilt the school in 1605, the 38th year of King Seonjo, this hall was built as its central building. Afterwards, at the suggestion of Confucian scholars, the school was relocated and rebuilt several times — below Haksodae, near Dongnae High School, and near Insaengmun Gate — before Magistrate Hong Su-man of Dongnae moved it in 1813, the 13th year of King Sunjo, to its present site on a favourable southeast-facing orientation below Bokhodae, west of the town wall. In September 1987 the building was dismantled and repaired from the purlins upward, and in September 2010 it was dismantled and repaired from the foundation stones upward; the dancheong (decorative colour painting) and resin treatment were completed in August 2011. The hall enshrines the spirit tablets of Confucius, seven Chinese Confucian scholars and eighteen Korean Confucian scholars, and it is here that Seokjeon Daeje, the memorial rite for Confucius, is performed every spring and autumn, on the first "sang" day of the second and eighth lunar months. The building has five bays across the front and three bays to the side, with a gabled roof, double eaves, and a bracket set of the double-ikgong (wing-bracket) type. On 9 May 2013 the heritage designation name was changed from Dongnae Hyanggyo to Daeseongjeon Hall of Dongnae Local Confucian School.
