Seated Stone Buddha in Junggyo-ri, Uiryeong
의령 중교리 석조여래좌상 · 宜寧 中橋里 石造如來坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThese are two Buddha statues excavated in 1925 from the site of an old temple at Mireukgol in Seokgok-ri and moved to this location. When found, their heads, arms and knees had been damaged, but they have since been restored. Both statues have small spiral curls attached to the head, above which a distinct topknot-shaped hair bun rises. Their faces bear a benevolent smile, and the ears are rendered long enough to reach the shoulders. The robe covers only the left shoulder, with a half-moon-shaped fold of drapery over the shoulder — a distinctive technique frequently seen in Silla stone Buddhas. The statue on the right has both palms open, the right hand resting on top of the left, with the two thumbs touching. The boat-shaped halo, carved with vine and flame patterns, and the octagonal pedestal, carved with a lotus pattern, are likewise characteristic of the Silla period. The statue on the left has the fingertips of the right hand pointing towards the ground, while the left hand is turned palm upward; its thin robe clings closely to the body, clearly revealing the contours of the figure beneath. Judging by their size and the detail of their carving, the two statues were not made at the same time, though the difference in date between them is not great. As seated stone Buddhas displaying features characteristic of Silla stone Buddha statues, they are important works.
