Ongnyugak Pavilion

This pavilion was built in 1693, the 19th year of King Sukjong, by the disciples and literary followers of Song Jun-gil (pen name Dongchundang, 1606–1672), including Song Gyu-ryeom (pen name Jewoldang, 1630–1709), to commemorate the place where Song Jun-gil had once given lectures. The name Ongnyugak comes from a line in a poem by Song Jun-gil — describing water trickling down the valley like drops of jade (層巖飛玉溜) — the building having been named for the beauty of the valley. It measures three kan across the front and two kan along the side, with a hip-and-gable (paljak) roof that forms the shape of the character 八 when viewed from the side. It has an unusual substructure in which pillars of differing heights were set on rocks within the valley to support the floor. Because the front faces the valley, the entrance is on the side; of the three bays, the two nearer the entrance are floored in wood and the remaining one is an ondol (heated) room. Above the building stands Biraeam Hermitage, and to its left is a rock carved with the phrase 超然物外 ('transcending worldly things'), said to be in Song Jun-gil's own hand. The signboard reading 'Ongnyugak' was written by Kim Su-jeung, pen name Gogun.
