Daeseongjeon Hall is the shrine enshrining Confucius. In the Joseon dynasty, which took Confucianism as its ruling ideology, each local Confucian school (hyanggyo) housed such a shrine to Confucius and encouraged Confucian learning. This hall was rebuilt in 1653, the fourth year of King Hyojong, and repaired again in 1907, the first year of the Yunghui era of the Korean Empire, giving it its present appearance. The spirit tablet of Confucius is enshrined at the centre of the hall, flanked to east and west by those of four sages including Mencius, ten disciples of Confucius, and six Confucian scholars of China's Song dynasty including Zhu Xi. The Dongmu and Seomu, the east and west subsidiary shrine halls, house the spirit tablets of Confucian scholars of China and Korea, beginning with Seol Chong of the Silla period. At the school, incense was offered at the shrine on the first and fifteenth days of each lunar month, and every spring and autumn the Seokjeon Daeje, a grand memorial rite for Confucius, was held. Sponsored by the local government and conducted by the school's scholars, this rite was a major event honouring the teachings of Confucius.
