Seated Stone Buddha of Jangchunsa Temple, Haman
함안 장춘사 석조여래좌상 · 咸安 長春寺 石造如來坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a typical stone image of the Medicine Buddha, holding a medicine bowl in the left hand while the fingertips of the right hand point down towards the ground; it is now covered in gilding. The head is covered with small snail-shell-shaped curls of hair, above which a topknot-shaped hair bun stands out clearly. The oval face, bearing a faint smile, has sharply defined features that give it a forceful presence. The robe flows over the left shoulder and arm, but its folds are rendered in a formulaic way that fails to convey sufficient volume, and the hands and knees are likewise somewhat crudely modelled, lacking a sense of mass. The teardrop-shaped halo behind the figure harmoniously combines a circular head halo with an oval body halo; the head halo bears a stylised lotus pattern, and its edge is bordered by a flame design. As this statue shows technique more advanced than that typical of the Unified Silla period, it is thought to have been made in the late Unified Silla period or the early Goryeo period.
