Sa Yuk-sin Tomb
사육신묘 · 死六臣墓

This is the tomb of the six loyal officials known as the Sa Yuk-sin ("six martyred subjects") — Bak Paeng-nyeon, Seong Sam-mun, Yi Gae, Ha Wi-ji, Yu Seong-won and Yu Eung-bu — who gave their lives in the second year of King Sejo of Joseon (1456) while plotting to restore King Danjong, the sixth monarch of Joseon, to the throne. In the third year of King Danjong (1455), when Danjong's uncle Grand Prince Suyang (later King Sejo) seized the throne and drove Danjong out, these officials, indignant at this act, plotted to restore Danjong but were discovered and met a gruesome end. To honour the loyalty and heroic spirit of the Sa Yuk-sin, a seowon (Confucian academy) was built on this site in the seventh year of King Sukjong (1681), and in the sixth year of King Jeongjo (1782) a sindobi — a memorial stele commemorating the lifetime achievements of a king or high official, erected beside a road near a tomb — was set up here. In 1955 a monument to the Sa Yuk-sin was also erected, and the burial ground was later expanded and newly refurbished in order to honour the spirit of loyalty and filial devotion. The original burial ground held only the graves of Bak Paeng-nyeon, Seong Sam-mun, Yu Eung-bu and Yi Gae, but the graves of Ha Wi-ji, Yu Seong-won and Kim Mun-gi were later added, so that all are now enshrined together.
