Bongmujeong was built in 1875, the twelfth year of King Gojong of Joseon, when Choe Sang-ryong, known by his pen name Bongchon, consulted with the villagers and had it constructed as a venue for administrative affairs. Originally, a thatched-roof office shared by four villages in Gongsan-myeon, Dalseong County — Gangdong, Dokjwa, Winam and Dansan — stood on this site. When these four villages were merged into the administrative district of Bongmu-dong, the thatched building was pulled down and this pavilion built in its place. It is centred on a main lecture hall, with Deokgyojae to the east and Yeyongjae to the west. The lecture hall was used to instruct farmers in civic matters and village regulations, and as a place where scholars gathered to compose poetry and pursue refined leisure. Deokgyojae and Yeyongjae were where villagers met to discuss local affairs. It is a five-bay building with round wooden columns set on round granite plinths, roofed with a gabled roof that forms the shape of the character 人 (person) when seen from the side, with a sloping extension roof attached along the sides. Bongmujeong is representative of late Joseon architectural style and is valued as an example of a public building of that period.
