Five-story Stone Pagoda in Changdong-ri, Chungju
충주 창동리 오층석탑 · 忠州 創洞里 五層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis five-storey stone pagoda stands about 2 km south of the Jungwon Tappyeong-ri Seven-storey Stone Pagoda (a National Treasure); it originally stood in the back garden of a private house and was moved about 100 m to the south and restored to its present form. It has a five-storey body raised on a two-tier base, and the finial ornament that once crowned the top is now missing, leaving only its base stone. The body stones, which grow gradually smaller towards the top, each carry pillar-shaped carvings at their four corners. The roof stones and body stones are each made of separate blocks of stone, but interestingly, at the fifth storey they are carved from a single block. The roof corners curve gently upward, and the number of eaves-supports on the underside decreases towards the top. The most striking feature of this pagoda is that a thick cushioning stone is set into the base to support the first-storey body stone, and a similar cushioning form is carved above the roof stone of each storey, giving a small variation to a body that is otherwise almost without ornament. Believed to date from the Goryeo period, this pagoda shows no delicate carving, but its simplified, bold overall composition is enough to convey the spirit of the Goryeo people.
