This is where the scholar Chae Myeong-bo (1574–1644) once lectured on learning, during the reign of King Injo of Joseon (r. 1623–1649). His descendants later rebuilt it to honour his virtuous conduct and renamed it Seongjaeseodang. Chae Myeong-bo's given name was Seon-gyeon, his courtesy name was Myeong-bo, his pen name was Yangjeonheon, and his clan seat was Incheon. He passed the saengwon examination in 1617, the ninth year of King Gwanghaegun, and when the incident of the Confinement of the West Palace occurred, he joined other scholars in submitting a memorial pointing out its wrongs. During the Yi Gwal Rebellion in 1624, the second year of King Injo, he raised a local militia, and in 1626, the fourth year of King Injo, he was appointed Chambong (a minor custodial post) of Huireung but declined it. He returned to his hometown, built the Seongjaejeong pavilion, and spent his later years there discussing scholarship with fellow literati.
