Jeong U-ryang Portrait
정우량 영정 · 鄭羽良 影幀

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a portrait of Jeong U-ryang (1692–1754), a civil official of the late Joseon period. Jeong passed the lower rank of the state examination in 1723, the third year of King Gyeongjong of Joseon, and rose through the post of Minister of War to become State Councillor of the Right; he was especially noted for his calligraphy. The portrait is a full-length depiction of him seated in a chair covered with tiger skin, set against a background of a flesh-coloured bamboo blind. His face is turned to the side, but the composition as a whole is symmetrical. He wears a samo, the black gauze cap of an official, and a deep blue official robe embroidered on the chest with a crane and clouds symbolising a civil official. It is rendered realistically in rich colours, using water-soluble pigments mixed with an animal-glue solution. It is currently privately owned and not open to public viewing.
