Five-story Brick-style Stone Pagoda in Eumnae-ri, Eumseong
음성 읍내리 오층모전석탑 · 陰城 邑內里 五層模塼石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA brick-style stone pagoda imitates the style of a brick pagoda — a pagoda built of kiln-fired clay bricks — but is instead built up using stones cut to resemble bricks. This pagoda originally stood at the site of Gyodongsa Temple in Gyo-dong; it was moved to Subong Elementary School in 1946, and relocated again in 1995 to its present site at the Eumseong Local Heritage Museum. It takes the form of a five-storey pagoda body set on a single-tier base; at present the body stones of the second and fifth storeys are missing. On each of the four faces of the first-storey body stone, a niche for housing a Buddha image is carved at the centre. The roof stones form stepped tiers on both their upper and lower surfaces, as in brick pagodas, and holes remain at the four corners where wind chimes were once hung. It was built in the early Goryeo period. From the late Unified Silla period onward, brick pagodas and brick-style stone pagodas were built mainly around Andong and Uiseong, and this pagoda appears to reflect that regional influence.
