Yeonsanamun Gate

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krYeonsanamun is the main gate through which people once passed to enter the government office of Yeonsan-hyeon county during the Joseon period. It is a two-storey gate-pavilion, three bays wide and two bays deep, with a hip-and-gable roof that forms the shape of the character "eight" (八) when seen from the side. The lower storey has a door fitted in each bay and served as a passageway, while the upper storey is an open timber-floored pavilion with railings on all four sides. Rather than resting on foundation stones, the building rises on stone pillars as far as the middle of the lower storey, with wooden pillars joined on top of these. Tradition holds that the site of a guest house once stood to its rear. Yeonsanamun is a representative example, among the late-Joseon government office buildings that survive today, of the gate-tower style.
