This shrine was built by the descendants of Bak In-taek, a cheosa (a lettered man who never held public office), to honour his memory. The exact year of its construction is unknown; at first a small thatched building was erected in the village where memorial rites were held. It was later relocated and rebuilt at its present site, and is said to have been repaired on two occasions since. According to tradition, a descendant once fell ill and could not be cured by any medicine. Bak In-taek then appeared to him in a dream and said that building a shrine and making offerings would bring a cure; when this was done, the illness was healed at once. Bak In-taek, the cheosa, was exiled to Chujado Island in the mid-Joseon period, where he is said to have lived a Buddhist life, treating the illnesses of the islanders and teaching them Buddhist doctrine.
