Ujeoseowon was founded in 1648, the 26th year of King Injo, on the former house site of Jo Heon (1544–1592) — a civil official and scholar of King Seonjo's reign who led a righteous army during the Japanese invasions of 1592–98 — to enshrine his spirit tablet and honour his scholarship and virtuous conduct. In 1675, the first year of King Sukjong, at the request of Song Jun-gil it was granted a royal name plaque, sayaek, a hanging board on which the king himself composed and inscribed a name for a shrine or academy, reading "Ujeo". After being rebuilt in 1834, the 34th year of King Sunjo, it survived the 1871 order of Heungseon Daewongun, in the eighth year of Emperor Gojong's reign, abolishing Confucian academies, and underwent a full renovation over three years from 1973. Jo Heon studied under Yi I and Seong Hon. When the Japanese invasions broke out he raised a righteous army in Okcheon and won distinction, gathering some 1,700 volunteers and, together with the monk-soldiers led by Yeonggyu, recapturing Cheongju Fortress. He was later killed in battle against Japanese forces at Geumsan Mountain. The academy's buildings include an outer gate, east and west dormitories, a lecture hall, an inner gate and a shrine. To the front right of the shrine stand a memorial stele to Jo Heon, erected in 1617, the ninth year of King Gwanghaegun, and its stele pavilion. The shrine measures three bays across the front and two along the side, its roof a double-eaved gabled form resembling the character 人 (person) when viewed from the side. The lecture hall measures four bays across the front and two along the side, with a hipped-and-gabled roof resembling the character 八 (eight) from the side. Flanking the central four-bay hall are heated rooms of two bays each, and the hall bears a plaque reading "Itaekdang" (麗澤堂).
