Byeongcheonsa Temple
병천사 · 秉天祠

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis shrine honours loyal subjects including Jeong Mong-ju of the late Goryeo period, along with Ji Yong-gi, Jeong Chung-sin, Ji Gye-choe and Ji Yeo-hae. After the disgrace of losing the nation to Japan in 1910, Ji Eung-hyeon, a powerful figure of this region, built the shrine in 1924 in order to carry on the loyalty and patriotic spirit of his ancestors. Within the compound stand a shrine hall, a portrait hall, east and west dormitories, a lecture hall, a ritual preparation hall, an inner three-bay gate, and a caretaker's quarters; of these, only the lecture hall, the largest building and the one most in need of preservation, has been designated as heritage and is managed accordingly. The lecture hall has a frontage of five kan (bays) and a depth of two kan; the central three kan form a wooden-floored hall, with rooms set to either side. Byeongcheonsa is a shrine building on such a scale that it feels comparable to a seowon, a Confucian academy.
