This is a set of surviving writings comprising household precepts written by Choryeo Yi Yu-tae (1607–1684) while he was in exile at Yeongbyeon. Yi Yu-tae was a disciple of Kim Jang-saeng and Kim Jip, excelled in particular in the study of ritual, and together with Kim Jip collated works such as the Sangnyebiyo and the Uirye Munhae. He was recommended for office on the strength of his learning and conduct during the reign of King Hyojong and began his official career. In 1674, the 15th year of King Hyeonjong, during the Gapin Mourning-Rites Dispute, he was impeached by Yun Hyu and other members of the Namin faction, was exiled to Yeongbyeon the following year, and was released only after the Gyeongsin Purge of 1680. The title on the label at the right of the cover reads "Gajeong Yuhun, single volume" (Household Instructions), and a red label at the centre of the cover reads "Written by Master Choryeo himself, on a day in the intercalary third month of the muo year." The volume count is marked "complete," and the cover is blue. The book measures 27.8 cm by 16.4 cm. The back cover bears the title "Master Choryeo's Household Instructions." Written at the age of seventy-three, with no clear prospect of release from exile, this collection entrusts household affairs to his family across nineteen sections, as follows: 1. Rites of the family shrine; 2. Rites of the seasonal ancestral rites; 3. Rites of the death-anniversary memorial services; 4. Rites of the grave memorial services; 5. Rites of mourning and burial; 6. Proprieties of the household; 7. Rules for managing the family's property; 8. Honouring frugality and thrift; 9. Preparing for the unexpected; 10. Guidelines for purchasing land; 11. Guidelines for managing vegetable gardens and fields; 12. Etiquette for family feasts; 13. Treatment of the poor; 14. Gatherings of kinsmen; 15. Coming-of-age and wedding rites; 16. Mutual-aid compact for the four mourning rites; 17. The way of living in one's home village; 18. The way of treating old friends; 19. The way of conducting oneself in the world.
