According to the "Hwangnyongsa Jangyuk" chapter of the Samguk yusa, Dongchuksa Temple is said to have first been built in 573, the 34th year of King Jinheung. It was subsequently rebuilt in 934, the eighth year of King Gyeongsun, during the reign of King Jeong Jong of Goryeo, in 1457 (the third year of King Sejo), and again in 1931, 1975 and 2005, bringing it to its present form. This three-story stone pagoda at Dongchuksa is a typical Silla-style stone pagoda. The granite base has lost all of its face stones, so its original height cannot be determined precisely. The body of the pagoda is such that the body stone and roof stone of each story are each carved from a single block. Corner pillars are carved in relief on all four sides of the body stones, and the roof-stone supports are carved in five tiers on the first and second stories but only three tiers on the third. Of the finial, only the base plate and canopy stone remain, and because these are of a sandstone different from the stone of the body, it is clear that the pagoda has been repaired on several occasions. It was moved to its present location in 2005, and part of the base was restored using added stone members.
