Sillyong-dong Five-story Stone Pagoda
신룡동오층석탑 · 新龍洞五層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stone pagoda stands tall beside an isolated house. No trace of a temple survives today, but a standing stone Buddha nearby suggests that a temple of considerable size once stood on the site. The pagoda has a five-story body set on a two-tier foundation, topped with a finial. Pillar shapes are carved at the four corners and centre of each side of the foundation. The height of the body stones drops sharply from the second storey and decreases proportionately up to the fifth; the eaves-supports on the underside of the roof stones number four tiers on the first to third storeys, reducing to three tiers on the fourth and fifth. At the top sit finial ornaments of a different stone, apparently added later as replacements. The overall style is somewhat formulaic, suggesting the pagoda was made in the early Goryeo period. The lower foundation had been damaged, and the upper foundation, partly missing and badly cracked, was close to collapse; it was dismantled and restored in 1981. Relics found during the dismantling are now preserved at the Gwangju National Museum.
