This is a junhogu — a certified transcript of an entry in the official household register — issued to Gwon Jun on 18 April 1444 (the twenty-sixth year of King Sejong's reign), copied out from the 1438 household register of Hanseongbu. At the time Gwon Jun was living in Yangdeok-bang, in the northern ward of Hanseongbu. His father was Gwon Geun, whose pen name was Yangchon. According to the document, Gwon Jun was thirty-five years old when it was issued and held the rank of Jobongdaebu, serving as Assistant Director (bujeong) of the Bureau of Weapons (Gungigam). His wife, of the Jeong clan of Haeju, was thirty-seven; her father was Jeong Yeok, who had held the post of Commander-in-chief of the Central Military Command. Their elder son, Gwon Hye, was fifteen, and his wife was a daughter of Choe Jeo. Their second son, Gwon Eung, was thirteen. Wherever characters in the document were added or corrected, the red seal reading "Seal of Hanseongbu" was stamped over them. The form in which this junhogu is written follows the junhogu format set out in the Ho-jeon (Taxation Statutes) chapter of the Gyeongguk daejeon (National Code). The left-hand edge of this particular document has been torn away; according to the "junhogu format" prescribed in the Gyeongguk daejeon, this section would originally have carried the signature of a senior official (dangsanggwan) of Hanseongbu and of two junior officials (dangha-gwan). This document is a rare piece of early Joseon documentation that shows how household registers were recorded at the time.
