Unbugunok
운부군옥 · 韻府群玉

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis copy of the Unbugunok was commissioned for printing because King Sejong judged it an essential reference work for scholars and writers. In the autumn of 1435 (the seventeenth year of King Sejong's reign), on the day Yu Gye-mun took his leave of the king before departing to take up his post as governor of Gangwon Province, the king ordered that the book be printed. The actual printing, however, took place the following spring, after King Sejong provided the Hall of Worthies (Jiphyeonjeon) with two fine copies from the royal lecture-hall library to serve as printing masters. The colophon to this edition was written by Nam Su-mun in June 1437, and it ends with the note "printed in separate sections at Gangneung and Wonju", showing that the printing was divided between the two locations. The original text supplied by royal order from the Hall of Worthies, for reprinting as woodblocks, was itself a book of the Yuan dynasty of China. The Unbugunok was compiled by Eum Si-bu of the Yuan dynasty. It comprises twenty chapters, arranging entries by rhyme category and giving under each rhyme a trail of citations back to its original source — a kind of encyclopaedic rhyming dictionary. Entries are grouped under four tone classes: level tone (pyeongseong), rising tone (sangseong), departing tone (geoseong) and entering tone (ipseong), and within each class further divided into individual rhyme groups, each headed by a representative character. The set is made up as follows. Volume 1, Unbugunok, Level Tone: Chapter 1 (一東・二冬・三江), Chapter 2 (四支・五微・六魚). Volume 2, Level Tone: Chapter 3 (七虞・八齊・九佳・十灰), Chapter 4 (十一真・十二文・十三元・十四寒・十五刪). Volume 3, Level Tone: Chapter 5 (一先・二萧・三肉・四豪・五歌), Chapter 6 (六麻・七陽). Volume 4, Level Tone: Chapter 7 (八庚・九青・十蒸), Chapter 8 (十一尤・十二侵・十三覃・十四鹽・十五咸). Volume 5, Unbugunok, Rising Tone: Chapter 9 (一東・二肿・三講・四紙・五尾・六語), Chapter 10 (七麻・八蕽・九螢・十贖・十一輫・十二吻・十三阮・十四旱).
