Oksanseo Bottle
옥산서병 · 玉山書屛

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Oksanseo Bottle is a folding screen made by mounting calligraphy by Yi Ok-san. Kept at the Ojukheon House memorial hall, it is a work from his childhood. It transcribes Tao Yuanming's poem "Return Home" in cursive script, and its brushwork closely resembles that of his mother, Sin Saimdang. Yi Ok-san learned calligraphy from his mother Saimdang as a child, and after he grew up he studied the hand of his father-in-law, Gosan Hwang Gi-no, who was celebrated as a master calligrapher of his day. As a result, among Yi Ok-san's surviving works (yumuk, writings or paintings left by the deceased), those from his youth resemble Saimdang's calligraphy, while many of his later works resemble the hand of his father-in-law Hwang Gi-no. This Oksanseo Bottle was originally a bound album (cheop, sheets of paper folded like a screen) of seventeen sheets of calligraphy, which has since been remounted as a nine-panel folding screen. At the very end of the screen one further panel is attached, bearing a colophon written by Min Tae-sik.
