This is a map of Jeju Island together with its preface, made in the first month of 1709, the thirty-fifth year of King Sukjong of Joseon. The whole sheet is divided into three registers: the upper and lower sections record the geographical circumstances of Jeju Island, while the map itself occupies the centre. The map is drawn as if viewed from the mainland side, so that the south of Jeju Island appears at the top of the sheet. Almost all the major oreum (volcanic cones) are marked, their names given in place of pictures of mountain-shaped peaks, and the harbours are also recorded in detail. The surrounding sea is rendered in a wave pattern, a manner of depicting the sea that carries on the style of the early Joseon period. The preface is set out briefly but precisely, and from it we learn that the map was made by Yi Gyu-seong, the magistrate of Jeju, during his term of office. As with other eighteenth-century maps of Jeju Island, twenty-four compass directions are marked around the map, and Japan, China and the Jeolla-do region are also noted. According to the preface, Jeju Island measures a little over 140 ri from east to west and a little over 70 ri from north to south (ri being a traditional unit of distance), and it records thirteen pastures, twenty-five beacon-fire stations, forty mining sites and one hundred and fifty villages. It further notes that in the early eighteenth century Jeju had 8,955 households and a total population of 45,129.
